ZJ Ice earned the nickname ‘Frigid’ in his early high school days from friends. However, this name was not to remain but to be remixed rather, into ‘Ice’ once he became a member of the ZIP 103 FM family.
Dj Ice started out in this business of music, approximately ten years ago, with dreams of becoming a full time music producer. He began by spending time around Dj Squeeze of the popularly known sound system, “Skyy Disco” and toned his craft by being observant and self-schooling himself on the intricacies of playing and mixing music.
Full time production hopes were neatly put on the back burner.
Though many individuals who have reaped success in the business of music may share with others their sad story of lack of family support, it is quite the opposite with this gentleman. He has numerous family members which have turned their love for music into a career, including a brother who is a studio engineer and a father who is an avid collector of music.
Therefore not only was the support there, but there were also role models in place if Ice ever needed that extra bit of advice.
After being a member of Dj Squeeze’s ‘Skyy Disco’ for years, it was finally time to take that first step towards the next level of his career, and so Ice joined forces with the well-known Coppershot Disco in the year 2000. Coppershot at the time comprised of seven members including, himself, with core members being Shaun Anderson aka Mr Shaun, Jason Henriques aka Dj Zig Zag and Matthew Grey aka Nero P. So far, as a member of the sound system, Ice has gained International recognition for work done with artistes, production of hit dancehall riddims and simple satisfaction of many party goers, uptown, downtown and all around, the world that is.
He has now been with the sound system for 10 years and counting. Ice has played at many events as an individual selector, as well as, along with his fellow selectors from Coppershot. And thus, has no dream event at which he hopes to play someday. He did inform me that his most memorable event was a department social which took place at UTECH during his early days as a selector, and it stands out because there is no feeling like the ‘new selector vibe’.
This zip jock’s musical selection differs from others, in style. Though
he admits that at the average event, ‘gangsta’ tunes receive more
forwards than ‘girl’ tunes, he sticks to playing songs that aren’t too
‘gangsta’ and are party or girl oriented. And I must say, I can’t hate
on that! Ice readily stated that he does not take sides when it comes to
the politics in the business and enjoys listening to Bounty Killer,
Terry Linen, Spice, Etana, Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel.
With strong
personal beliefs, ZJ Ice is one of Jamaicas rapidly growing in
popularity, and talent. Taking over Jamaica by storm.
