Yola Moi To make with Nuh Wine Discreet
Capable of breaking boards as a martial artist, emerging singer Yola Moi is hoping her new single Nuh Wine Discreet, a collaborative effort with dancehall star Busy Signal, will see her break barriers as she strives to make a mark on the entertainment landscape.
She gets a chance to perform the song when she takes the stage at the Linkage Awards set for May 3 in Bronx, New York on May 3. ”That should be a good showcase for me as an upcoming artiste,” she said.
Recorded on the Riva Nile Productions’ ‘One-Stop Riddim’, Nuh Wine Discreet doesn’t fit into the mould of a typical dancehall song. “Well, my manager came up with the idea for me to do a ‘collab’ with Busy Signal,” she revealed. “He said, ‘Yola find a riddim and some lyrics’, and I did just that and with Busy Signal in mind, I was thinking up tempo dancehall, pop, dancing tune, wining tune and the lyrics just flowed.”
She performed the song with Busy Signal at Caymanas Park recently and based on the audience’s reaction, she may have found a winning formula even if some disc jockeys are struggling to make it fit onto their playlists. “Disc jockeys have said they have trouble mixing the track in with other dancehall songs cause the riddim nuh normal, which I completely understand. But I'm not working to be normal so it's cool. Couple of them have been giving it strength still so respect for that, they know themselves.”
Normal is not what Yola Moi does. Before she became a singer just over three years ago, she was already a second-degree black belt and a member of Jamaica’s Combined Martial Arts team that has travelled the globe. On her travels she has won dozens of contests. She is also a professional dancer and a gifted graphic artist, who is getting her degree in marketing from the University of Technology (UTECH).
She intends to see the song break through internationally and is already working on promotion for the song. “I have PR's who are on the job as well as the official video that will give the song a boost. It will be premiering on D'Wrap on CVM TV this Friday,” she said. “We are planning to promote the song and video worldwide.”
Getting Busy to be on the song with her was not hard, she revealed as he loved the vibe and Yola Moi said she would definitely work with the entertainer again on future projects. She revealed that she also has other projects that she is currently working on.
