Vybz Kartel Not Running Dancehall Music Anymore


It’s no secret that Vybz Kartel is not running dancehall anymore. The self proclaimed ‘Worl Boss’ started losing the grip he had on the industry in 2015.


Even though new music are being released weekly from him, due to his physical absence his impact is not being felt. His fans will say otherwise.

So who is now running dancehall? This can be debated as a number of names will pop up. Names such as Popcaan, Aidonia, Alkaline, Konshens, Masicka and young ones like Jahmiel and Vershon.

The one and only King and who is keeping Dancehall alive; Vybz Kartel. None other, none better, none can dream of coming close. The talent should be cherished and exposed as a cultural asset, yet the darkness of men's heart and mind won't allow credit and recognition; not even for a maintaining a culture. No support from his fellow artists; even though his album release benefited the entire industry.

If you think Kartel is NOT running dancehall anymore answer this: why is it that a search for Vybz Kartel in Youtube leads to results that also include Alkaline, Masicka etc songs?
It's because they add Vybz in the search tags because they want their songs to come up when people search for Kartel songs - IT'S BECAUSE ADDI IS STILL RUNNING DANCEHALL as the artist generating the most interest.
I search for Alkaline and Masicka songs on Youtube and ONLY get Alka or Masicka songs in return - NO KARTEL SONGS. As Vybz does not need to piggyback on any other dancehall artist to get exposure. The scientific result is clear: ADDI STILL RUNNING DANCEHALL YA BUMBACLOTS!

Worl' Boss is still running dancehall - maybe that's a secret to you - or maybe you just don't know. Alkaline is a black and white photocopy of Kartel without the many other facets of Vybz. No Konshens or Maskica gets the critical acclaim Kartel does. Look at the new styles and sounds in Kartel's new single Fever just released to immense anticipation last week. Kartel takes RISKS other dancehall stars don't dare. For example, Kartel's funny' gay man's laugh that has become another vocal quirk in his arsenal of inventive vocal sounds. WHO ELSE IN JAMDOWN would do a gay laugh in the dancehall and remain standing??? Kartel ah di innovator and still running dancehall simply due to his talent - just comes down to talent and work ethic.

If you look at it from an artistic perspective, Kartel is STILL leading dancehall - a feat made all the more remarkable for the fact he has been incarcerated for near 5 years - and already been the leader of the pack in dancehall for nearly a decade. He is a figure that towers in Jamaica much like James Brown dominated his genre.
Kartel continues to innovate and lead dancehall with his style of singing and rapping, his witty and clever lyrics and his disregard for commericalism which has tained other dancehall singers with style but no substance. Just look at his versatility - he had a recent song called Electric which was a totally new sound for dancehall, his now song Forever (No Drama) was praised by reputed critics for it's unique way of making dancehall sound almost pop - yet he still busts out with hardcore tracks that are the opposite of pop. This man can take you on with both hands tied behind his back and leave artists like Konshens, Masicka etc in the dust. I like Konshens and all the other dancehall singers too, but they are not masters like Kartel. Music critics on the West are increasingly marvelling at the story of Vybz Kartel.... so sorry but you are not really appreciating the way this guy leads the genre and even cutting edge US musicians are claiming him as an inspiration...

No doubt Kartel is not at the top of the Dancehall chain. His absence from the scene is affecting this. I agree that Alkaline, Popcaan, Masicka and now Jahmeil is carrying the dancehall among others. But Alkaline is #1 right now, the newlevel unlocked album is pretty good in my opinion.
