Screwdriver - In May, the African Union celebrates its 50th anniversary, but last Friday roots-reggae singer hailed the organization with the release of his latest album.

The aptly titled African Union was released on iTunes.

It will be out on compact disc in early March courtesy of Fort Lauderdale independent company Upstairs Music.

"Africa has come a long way but there's still a fight going on. It's my duty as a Rastaman to big up all the heroes," said Screwdriver.

African Union was produced by Danny Breakenridge, head of Upstairs Music.

It features veteran musicians Dean Fraser and Tony Green on saxophones, trumpeters David Madden and Chico Chin, on bass Paul Gauntlet, guitar Dwight Pinkney and keyboardist Mallory Williams.

Most of the songs on African Union pay homage to Africa, including Sweet Mother Land, Third World and One World.

Screwdriver, best known to Jamaican audiences for the 1989 hit song Sharon (A Pregnant Yuh Pregnant), has been a fixture on the South Florida reggae scene for nearly 20 years.

His previous albums include Let Me Remind You, Prophecy and Road Block.

The African Union was formed (as the Organisation of African Unity) in May, 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with 32 members. The organisation officially became the African Union in 2002.
