Reggae, soca duel at Generation Showdown

A new and exciting element has been added to the Generation Showdown event scheduled for the Jean Pierre Complex, Port-of-Spain, on February 20.

In addition to the calypso and soca superstars on the billing are two Jamaican reggae/dancehall artistes, namely Barrington Levy and Popcaan, joining the battle between the old school and nu skool music to see which of the two will end up reigning supreme.

To date, after two showdowns in 2012 and last year, neither the elders nor the younger artistes could have been declared the winner as the audiences thoroughly enjoyed every single act equally.

Now Spektakula Promotions, the producers of Generation Showdown, is adding fuel to the fire by not only pitting old school reggae against the nu skool dancehall, but also drawing battle lines between the music of Jamaica and that of Trinidad.

Levy has for over two decades been one of the top crooners of reggae music and although he has performed here many times, he always draws a sold-out audience that demand encore after encore from him at every show. Levy has been known to perform for over two hours and still not cover his expansive repertoire of hits. Among Levy’s most loved hits are Broader Than Broadway, Murderer, Be Strong, Too Experienced, Living Dangerously, Under Mi Sensi, and the list continues.

Popcaan has been hailed as the next major dancehall artiste out of Jamaica. He was groomed by Vybz Kartel and first gained international recognition on the track Clarks on which he featured alongside Kartel and Gaza Slim. Popcaan’s career took off from there and he has since released a string of hit singles among them Ravin, Party Shot, and The Only Man She Wants, which made it to number 89 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Charts.

As for the calypso/soca element of the showdown, this will feature several of the most respected elders of the art form attempting to “school” some of the top young acts of the day. Neither the “old schoolers” nor the “nu schoolers” intend to give in without a valiant fight, which will make for a very exciting show in which the real winners will be the patrons.

Generation Showdown 2014 will include performances by Black Stalin, Johnny King, SuperBlue, David Rudder, Baron, Swallow, Explainer, Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons, Kees Dieffenthaller, Mr Killa, Chucky, Kerwin DuBois, Farmer Nappy and more. There will also be a battle between the MCs who are Tommy Joseph in the old school corner and Sonny Bling in the nu skool corner.
