Fast rising Jamaican musician, OMI is set to capitalize on his strong run of form in the immediate future as he is putting the finishing touches on his debut album which will be unveiled soon.
The album comes on the heels of several hit singles for the young singer since emerging on the local scene in 2012, including Cheerleader, Fireworks and My Old Lady. OMI confirmed to the Jamaica Gleaner in a report published Tuesday that the album will be "full of diversity, the topics range from just about everything, love, sex, social commentary, the whole works.”
According to OMI, his songs are getting a lot of positive acclaim particularly in the American state of Hawaii, where he has established a diverse fan base.
"YouTube was the first place that my song (Cheerleader) got so much recognition and most of these people were from Hawaii, and I'm talkin' about babies not yet three years old and it was just overwhelming," he told the Gleaner. "The fan base that I have in Hawaii is pretty overwhelming.”
OMI believes that there are stereotypes associated with today’s state of Jamaican music and he hopes to change such a perception with his music, which he says transcends across various generations.
"Jamaican artistes are stigmatized as being unethical in many aspects of the business of music. That is the opinion of many and not my opinion, but I am trying to change that," he said. "I am producing the type of music that breaks down all communication barriers, so people can relate to it. I am speaking their language, yuh know, whilst embracing my culture.”
In the meantime, OMI will embark on a summer tour which will see him travel to Hawaii as well as Miami, French Guiana, Guam and Australia. He also released the first edition of his new vlog, OMI's WORLD last week.
