Brick & Lace
Popular Jamaican female group, Brick & Lace has officially disbanded after a nine-year run together.
The duo, which consists of sisters Naliah and Nyanda Thorbourne has split after the latter singer decided to pursue a solo career. Initially founded in 2004, the group consisted of three members, including their sister, Tasha Thorbourne. Tasha decided to leave the group in 2007, but kept working with her sisters behind the scenes as a co-writer for their songs.
According to Nyanda Thourbourne in an interview with the Jamaica Observer, tension long-existed within the group as creative contrasts became evident.
"It was just time. There was always a lot of tension and a wanting to explore and do different things. So we both felt this was something we needed to do at this time," she told the Observer. "There was always the feeling that we had to compromise. If I wanted more of a Dancehall feel for a song and she wanted more R&B; if a video should look this way and even on a photo shoot, who preferred which shot and angle.”
She also said their sibling rivalry played a part in that tension, but said, "The love is still there. I really just wanted to spread my wings, just wanted to fly and couldn't help but feel like there was a brick on my foot holding me down.”
Despite the break-up, Thorbourne said she is open to a possible reunion in the future. In the meantime, she has collaboration coming in the near future with veteran deejays, Assassin and Bling Dawg and hopes to return to Jamaica from her current residence in Florida, as she looks to record more new material
Brick & Lace rose to fame in 2007 thanks to their single, Love Is Wicked. The single and similarly-tiled album was distributed by Kon Live Records, a record label founded by Senagalese hip-hop superstar, Akon. The song charted on several local, American and European charts and was followed up by efforts such as Never Never and Get That Clear (Hold Up).
Along with Tasha Thorbourne, Naliah and Nyanda also joined forces with younger sister and fellow singer/songwriter, Candace 'I-Candy' Thorbourne to create a writing team named Bloodline.
The team garnered its greatest achievement in 2012 as they wrote the lyrics to Follow The Leader by internationally-acclaimed singer/actress, Jennifer Lopez and Puerto Rican duo, Wisin Y Yandel. The song copped the top sport on the Billboard Latin charts that summer.
