So who would you say is the real bad gyal of Dancehall? Every Dancehall fan will have an opinion of who she is.
Since the dawn of the Dancehall era, entertainers dominating the scenes would be given the title.
What would make an artist the baddest depends on a number of factors; such as gritty lyrics, most popular song to throw lyrical war including their fashion-ability and more.
Various male Dancehall artist have been dubbed the baddest some point in their musical career. Artists such as Bounty Killer aka "The War Lord", Ninja Man as "The Real Front Teeth Gold Teeth Don Gorgon", Gage as "The Walking Gun" and Mad Cobra, who by his numerous lyrically inclined war tunes could not be disregarded. So why not acknowledge their female counterparts?
We already know the Queen of Dancehall is none other than Lady Saw who have also held the title of the bad gyal of dancehall for a very long time. Even though that is very highly contested at the moment by the present showstopping endeavors of Spice, as well as the fact that Lady Saw has converted to Christianity and now a gospel artist going by her given name Marion Hall.
So which other artists are in the running? There is D.I., Ce'cile, Tiana, Macka Diamond, Star Face, Sheba, Pamputtae and Shenseea who are the top female artists to have the most lyrically war inclined songs.
Let's go back to September 2016. A huge feud unfolded on social media when self-proclaimed Bad Gyal Ce'cile took offense to D.I. referring to herself as Bad Gyal D.I. in a Hype TV interview. Ce'cile insists she was first to use the moniker and expects respect by anyone else who chooses to use the same. D.I. was shocked at the statements made, inciting that she thought they were cool so why throw shade. Where was all this coming from?
Ce'cile was first to use the moniker when she released her first album of the same title in 2008. It wasn't until 2011, D.I. used it in her collaboration with Cherine Anderson called “Rebel”. However, Ce'cile didn't acknowledge D.I.'s usage of Bad Gyal until the interview in 2016, even though they have been friends in the business since 2003 and also collaborated on “Turn Him On” in 2004. Why question it now? Seems personal.
Wonder if Ce'cile will have concerns about the younger, more beautiful, sexier and equally talented Shenseea, who now claims to be the Real Bad Gyal of Dancehall. Shenseea sure displays all the necessary qualities needed to hold such a title. What will happen once Ce'cile gets wind of Shenseea's proclamation? Will she throw shade again? Or send praises to the newest kid on the block? We will see as the drama will certainly unfold, hopefully soon too.
