Nico D Releases New Pop Reggae Single With Kemar "Flava" McGregor
OSLO, NORWAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2014: French/Norwegian reggae singer Nico D released his new pop-reggae single, titled “The Right Time,” Tuesday, October 28, 2014 on iTunes. The new single – a toaster’s groove that showcases Nico D’s bright, soulful vocal style – was produced by pop-reggae impresario Kemar “Flava” McGregor, and features vocals from Norwegian reggae star Admiral P. The single was featured at number 38 on the iTunes Reggae Top 200 singles chart in Norway earlier this week.
Nico D's new single emerged from a track from Kemar McGregor, which inspired the infectious melody, vibesome mood and romantic lyrical content of 'The Right Time.'
“When I listened to the riddim for the first time, it immediately caught my attention," Nico D said. "Flava had named it 'Right Time Riddim,' and on the first listen, as I got to the chorus part, I just started singing the hook. By the time I got to the end of the track, the chorus was set. So I just built the whole tune around it, got my friend Admiral P to spice it up with a deejay vibe on the second verse and we were ready to go!”
Nico D’s performance reflects a growing international trend – crossover hits infused with Caribbean reggae flavor – evidence that pop-reggae is gaining global popularity and reaching new audiences.
“I just had a major #1
hit in Norway, which definitely has a pop-reggae flavor, so I have first-hand experience that pop-reggae makes it easier to bridge the gap to mainstream music,” Nico D said. “In the future, I believe pop-reggae will continue to facilitate crossing over musically, and help reggae artistes reach a broader audience. There are already many examples of this.”
Nico D said his new single represents one of his favorite songwriting themes - romantic reggae. He said the beauty of romantic reggae affords him infinite creative possibilities, and inspires him to conjure many different angles and formulas in which to write love songs. The genre always piques his interest and never becomes boring.
“I always want people to feel good when they hear my music, that’s my #1 goal,” said Nico D. “In my opinion, music is supposed to give you strength, and in this particular case, the courage to follow your heart, but also the wisdom to follow your mind: go for the woman you love, but be patient and wait for The Right Time.”
Born in Sevres, France, Nico D has achieved a continuous succession of iTunes Chart-ranked singles, both as a lead vocalist, and as a collaborator. He has performed internationally at world-renowned reggae festivals, including Jamaica’s Rebel Salute, Teen Splash and Dancehall JAMJAM events, and has released recordings with reggae legends Jah Mason, Lutan Fyah and Dean Fraser.
