Hodari - Take Shaggy, Sean Paul and Rupee, Dancehall, Soca, Pop, Hip Hop and Reggae, mix them together to get an idea of Hodari’s musical style.
A fusion, a blend of the Caribbean sounds but always with Jamaican flavor, unapologetically and unashamedly poppy and clubby, is how Hodari makes his music. The artiste/songwriter/producer said, "The same way a chef prepares a great tasting dish is the same way I try to make my music, I try to put all the right ingredients in and experiment.” To put it simply, I just make music.
If it works, great, and if not, back to the drawing board, which has happened many times," he laughs.
Hodari spent his early years between the often volatile areas of Waterhouse and
Franklin Town in Kingston, Jamaica until the age of 5 when his parents decided they
wanted to raise their then 3 boys in a better environment and moved the family to
Portmore, St. Catherine. Hodari admitted that in his teen years he loved listening
to music, like most people, but had no inkling that he would be making music
professionally,
but it was always there somewhere. "I used to fool around the keyboard a
bit and usually had one somewhere in the house but never learned to
play…. still cant,” he laughs.
Reggae and Dancehall music was not played in his house when growing up and got
into
Dancehall in his final year of high school around the time that
mega-hit dancehall producer Dave Kelly was ruling the airwaves. I really
started liking Dancehall when I 1st heard Buju Banton's "Browning" at a
Wolmer’s High School fete, which is the school he attended.
In his quest for knowledge about the music industry Hodari has met and had the
privilege of meeting and gaining information, insight and even being in the studio
watching
some of Jamaica's best producers. Special mention to Jeremy Harding
(former manager of Multi-platinum selling Jamaican Artiste Sean Paul)
who gave me my first bit of recording software and beat-making program,
and Nigel Staff (multi-platinum selling songwriter - Shaggy's Hot Shot
Album, Sean Paul's Give It Up To Me, to name a few) who encouraged and
helped me to hone my craft as a songwriter and producer, “Still working
on that as that is an on going journey” he stated .
As a songwriter Hodari has co-written for other Jamaican artistes and the released
songs are:
- What's Up Papi by TIA & Danny English on the Sexy Lady Explosion Compilation
- Wish You Were Here by Voicemail on their Japan released album Let's Go
- Come Home Soon by Mr. Easy on the Golden Bathtub Compilation
- Let It Be by Nesbeth also on the Golden Bathtub Compilation
- Can’t Breathe by Denyque which received favorable airplay in his country of birth
Jamaica, and the Caribbean
- Memories by Harry Toddler
And
most recently “Thank God” by Ishawna & “Buss It” by Naazir on Foota
Hype’s new Church Money Riddim. Coming soon will also be songs for
Reggae artiste Nature.
Hodari's 1st official release "Get Outa
Control", is a tribute to all the hot, independent women. It's their
moment to shine and for the moment forget about everything else, strut
their stuff, show off a little, shake their moneymakers, model &
take the runway.
He wrote, produced, recorded and performed it for his record label, FuGen and his 2nd release “Aim 4 The Sky” ft. TIA, a song encouraging everyone to strive for the best and never give up, were independently released digitally and are available on the major digital stores like ITunes and Amazon.
Hodari said, "I'm having fun being
me, making music, meeting & making new fans, and enjoying myself on
my musical journey. I’m looking forward to making my mark on the
musical stage and playing my part in making music from Jamaica and the
Caribbean more recognized globally. Skytime!!! Aim 4 The Sky. Heading To
The Top!!
