Demarco signs with Akon's 'Kon Live label'
DANCEHALL deejay Demarco has signed a three-album deal with hip-hop artiste and music executive Akon's Kon Live label. He is also now being managed by En-Treeg Management, a company owned by Akon's wife, business executive Rozina Negusei.
In an interview with Splash yesterday, Negusei shed light on what sparked her interest in working with the popular deejay and producer.
“Demarco is a very talented and creative. He can write, produce and he's easy to work with. He was introduced to me by Mixmaster David (popular Jamaican disc jock) who brought him to my house,” said Negusei.
“We listened to him, went through his music and it was amazing. We were impressed.”
Demarco — whose real name is Collin Demar Edwards — is known for hits including Duppy Know Who Fi Frighten, Fallen Soldiers, True Friend, Show It, Lazy Body, Good Book, Puppy Tail and I Love My Life.
Earlier this year, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States.
“Our plan is to promote Demarco worldwide. We are targeting the United States, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. He performed at the BET Experience in California last weekend and we had him doing a lot of radio interviews. We are about to drop his new single No Problem, which features Akon and a Nigerian artiste called Runtown,” Negusei told Splash.
A video for No Problem is slated to be released on July 6.
“We are excited to have Demarco as a part of our team. We're also working on his new album which he is producing,” Negusei added.
Akon — who was born in St Louis, Missouri — spent much of his childhood in Senegal. He released his debut album Trouble in 2004. To date, he has released three studio albums. His hits include Sexy Chick (with David Guetta), Smack That, I Wanna Love You, Ghetto, Locked Up, Lonely, and Girls, featuring Beenie Man.
Started in 2006, Kon Live was once home to acts including Jamaica's Brick and Lace, Lady Gaga, Kardinal Offishall, and Colby O'Donis. Its releases are distributed by Interscope/Geffen Records.
