With a new album due out this summer and new songs out including collaborations with reggae-music icon Marcia Griffiths, deejay Lady G is optimistic about her fortunes in 2013.
The deejay, who shot to fame back in 1988 with her hit single Nuff Respect, is feeling confident about Rhythm Haffi Roll, a song she did with Griffith that has been getting a lot of love in Florida. "The song has a good message. It was produced by Penthouse Records, and in Florida it has been number one for a few weeks now," Lady G said even as she lamented the relatively cool response she has been getting from local radio stations here at home.
"I don't know why it hasn't done well here in Jamaica. We haven't been hearing it much on the radio."
RhythmHaffi Roll was recorded more than a year ago and is one of two songs she did with the former I-Threes singer, one of the stalwarts of reggae music.
"She was doing it for an album she has coming out, a combination album with various artistes on it. I am one of the lucky ones because I have two songs on the album, two combinations, as there is another song called Woman," Lady-G said.
Lady G left the island yesterday to perform on a show in Florida that forms part of Griffiths' album launch. Both women are in the process of shooting a music video for RhythmHaffi Roll.
"Because really, visuals are doing the thing right now," she said.
The video was to have been shot recently by Wayne Benjamin of Fabricated Projects and is expected out soon.
The dynamic duo will also embark on a tour in April, Lady
G confided.
Linkage AwardsThe deejay who will be performing at the celebrated Linkage Awards show in New York on March 16, has been rather busy lately with a lot of studio work.
"I have another dancehall song called Have It Up that is getting good reviews and is getting a lot of play," she said.
"I also just had another video released for a song called Herbie. That is another song that is doing well also. Herbie was produced by Chiney K Productions, so basically I am just doing a lot of recording because I also have a couple singles that have not been released as yet that I want to put together to put out the album."
The album, she said, is still a lot of work in progress and has not even had a name, but she wants to have it out by summer.
"I am on the road to finishing up the album. I want to take my time and not really rush it. I want to take my time and do what I am doing properly."
The album, which she is producing herself, will have several collaborations and will see Lady-G taking on the roll of a sing-jay.
"It's going to be more like a sing-jay kind of style, showing a different side of Lady G. Mi love the singing thing so ..." she said breaking off her statement to deliver a mischievous smile and a laugh.
"So we're going to give them some of that but it (the songs on the album) will be about love from all different angles."
Lady G is set to perform at Follow the Arrow on March 2.
